As the cooler weather starts to set in with the approach of fall, many couples are beginning to think about where they should go for their next weekend getaway. The autumn is a magical time of year in many locations around the world. Something about the changing colors of the leaves and the slight chill in the air is just perfect for romance. If you are thinking about going on a weekend getaway with your sweetheart, here are some fabulous romantic destinations to consider visiting this fall:
Moustiers Sainte-Marie, France
This southeastern French town looks as if it came right out of the pages of a fairytale. From the stunning Gorges du Verdon, a 700-meter-deep river canyon, to the Faïenceries shops, this romantic getaway is sure to impress. The village sits atop a rushing mountain stream with small waterfalls going into the canyon. The narrow medieval architecture and streets are accented by the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel, an 8th century chapel that has been the destination for pilgrimages since the year 470. The two focal points of the village are the 12th century Notre-Dame church that is adorned with a four-level Lombard Romanesque bell tower, as well as the star suspended across the Rioul Valley. The gold-leaf-plated star, as well as the chain suspending it, was placed there by Sir Blacas, a knight who returned from a long period of captivity during the crusades. Be sure to check out the accommodations at La Bastide de Moustiers, where the French cuisine is as magical as the stay. Take home one or two of the pottery pieces from the Faïenceries shops as souvenirs of your adventure together.
Napa Valley, California
If you are looking for something a bit closer to home, Napa Valley is the place to go. From local wineries to bike rides and day hikes, Napa Valley has a little of everything for the adventurous couple. Stay at the Auberge du Soleil and welcome in the harvest season with a private suite that boasts fantastic views of the wine country. Schramsberg sparkling winery also hosts a special Crush Camp during harvest time. Participants get to see what it's like to harvest the grapes, taste the juices as they start the process of becoming a sparkling wine, and sample wines and great food.
Take a trip to the northeastern part of the United States and get a glimpse at the legendary fall colors that greet you from the treetops. Visit Martha’s Vineyard and one of many of the wineries on the island for a special tasting, or check out the Cranberry Festival. Forget pumpkin – the cranberry festival celebrates all things cranberry. On the 195 acre cranberry orchard, guest will find chocolate covered cranberries, cranberry breads and cakes, juices and, of course, cocktails.
This small town has only one traffic light and an abundance of rustic horse farms and wineries. Enjoy a romantic carriage ride for two, complete with champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, from Salamander Resort and Spa. After your day out on the town exploring antique shops and gazing at the fall foliage, visit The Red Fox Inn, an old-world style tavern built in 1728 that features incredible regional cuisine and furnishings that transport you back the nation’s early days.
Located just forty miles north of San Francisco, California’s Wine Country is on the list twice simply because its sheer beauty and abundance of options. Indulge in a spa night with your love interest, a perfect way to relax after a day of exploring the countryside.
