How You Can Change the World

"There is no greater thing you can do with your life and your work than follow your passions – in a way that serves the world and you." - Sir Richard Branson

For the second time this year, Amber Kelleher-Andrews, the CEO of Kelleher International, had the exciting privilege to co-host a special leadership gathering on Necker Island with Richard Branson's charity Virgin Unite (read about it here). During the week-long event, speakers and workshops encouraged business leaders and entrepreneurs to leverage their influence to be a force for good in the world. With an emphasis on philanthropy and putting people and the planet above profits, business leaders and social entrepreneurs at the event shared strategies for making a positive impact and giving back to their communities.

Kelleher International has always had its roots in the idea that connections and relationships make a constructive difference in the world, so it makes sense that philanthropy has become the main focus of the company. By bringing together people who have more in common than just a romantic connection, Kelleher International helps influential individuals connect with one another to form relationships that can impact the world around them.

The goals of philanthropy and matchmaking are intertwined at their foundations. The term "philanthropy" comes from the Greek words philos, which means love in the sense of care and compassion, and Anthropos, meaning human being. By definition, a philanthropist is someone who expresses their love of others by helping others.

Philanthropy is not only limited to the more influential individuals in our communities. While it may seem that a business leader or social entrepreneur is more suited to giving back through charitable work or donations, the truth is that philanthropy is an essential habit for all of us. Not only will it improve the lives of those you reach, but it will also better your own life as well.

Putting people and the planet above profit is an ideal strategy for life, not just business. For example, many couples report that spending time volunteering together in their communities is an experience that enriches the relationship. Sharing a joint purpose to help others can bring people closer together and strengthen relationships. Philanthropic work can also open doors for new romances, friendships and partnerships to form.

This summer, take some time to discover your philanthropic passion. There are communities all around the globe that could use your assistance, and some of them may even be in your own backyard. Consider volunteering at a homeless shelter, animal shelter, community garden or any other outlet that inspires you with your friends, with your significant other or by yourself. You may be surprised at what happens when you share your influence as a force for good. In the immortal words of Paul McCartney, "In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."

Amber Kelleher-Andrews and Virgin Unite intend to host another Leadership Gathering in Morocco next February and have so far raised $800,000 for charity.
