It is not unusual for single people to weigh the pros and cons of online dating in their quest for love, but some women on Match.com made the horrifying discovery that they were getting more “con” than anything else in the latest online dating scandal. Two men were found guilty this week of laundering money through an online dating scam that targeted single women on Match.com. The victims responded to a profile of an attractive middle-aged man. After making contact with the victims, the conmen, operating under the pseudonym “James Richards,” would woo the women with words of affection, sending messages such as:

You make me feel loved, you make me feel safe, most importantly you make me feel wanted. I knew our friendship would grow from the first day we spoke but neither one of us could imagine the love exploding, no thundering into our hearts.
Honey, seriously I love you because I have never been loved by anyone like you loved me. I feel like a complete man. The thought of your hands on my body, particularly when you hold me when I am sleeping. I love your generous kindness to me. I love your eye and lips, your sense of self-love. I want to be with you now.

After the relationship developed, “James Richards” told the victims that he was due to receive a £100m inheritance from his father, but was unable to access it due to complications in receiving it from India. He requested financial aid from the victims to help free his inheritance from red tape. At first, the women were charged a £700 legal fee, but as the requests rose to upwards of £100,000, many of the women realized that it was a scam.

The conspirators, two men from Southsea in the UK, were caught and convicted of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud.

Unfortunately, this is not a problem that is limited to just one dating website. Scams like this happen all across the internet and many con artists use online dating sites to prey on single women who are just looking for love. Even the strongest and smartest people can be deceived when they are unable to physically see the person to whom they are speaking online. Scammers create fake profiles to lure in unsuspecting people and then prey on their wallets and emotions.

When it comes to love, you really should not trust online dating sites where you cannot see the other person or verify their identity. This is why it is so important to trust an experienced matchmaker who knows what they are doing to find you the love of your life. While online dating is certainly a new concept, matchmaking is not. There are some things that are better left up to the human mind rather than a computer algorithm. Kelleher International Matchmaking does all of the background checks on your behalf while searching for your compatible match and potential soul mate. Not only do we take care to find someone who is compatible with you, we also protect you from being scammed by a vicious con artist.

Do not trust your love life to a computer.
