The World’s Most Romantic Locations

shutterstock_130312385.jpgPrince William and Kate Middleton recently visited India’s “monument of love,” the infamous Taj Mahal. The couple took a private tour of the sprawling, ivory-white marble mausoleum, which was originally built as a testament to the emperor’s favorite wife.

Kate and William spoke to reporters outside the monument. “It’s been really incredible to learn about the romance of the building, and really beautiful architecture,” the duchess said of their trip. Kate also noted the Taj Mahal was the perfect romantic destination for she and her husband just before the couple celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary on April 29th.

Kate and William posed for photos outside the Taj Mahal before sitting on the same bench Princess Diana famously sat on during her solo visit in 1992.

With so much romance entangled in one location, it begs the question: which other romantic destinations are out there? Here are just a few other places we recommend for adventurous couples in search of a romantic vacation:

Juliet’s Balcony

If you and your date are bibliophiles, you might enjoy a Shakespeare-themed date. Visit Juliet’s balcony where she infamously parted from her Romeo “with such sweet sorrow.” Visit the balcony, rub Juliet’s statue for luck, and enjoy your time in romantic Italy! It wouldn’t hurt to indulge in some of the country’s famous cuisine while you’re there.

Fontana di Trevi

While you’re in Italy, trek on over to the Fontana di Trevi, which is conveniently located close to the Colosseum, the Vatican Museum and the Pantheon. Lovers should visit the miniature fountain on the left side of the famous fountain. According to local legend, couples who drink from the “small fountain of lovers,” will have a relationship blessed with fidelity and happiness. Bonus: coins tossed into the larger fountain are collected daily and donated to help the Roman Catholic charity Caritas bring food and social programs to the area. You aren’t just a hopeless romantic – you’re a philanthropist!

Montmartre

Northern Paris is home to breathtaking views, winding streets and small cafés to whet your palate. This city is where Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent Van Gogh, among others, all studied or had studios at some point during their careers. Enjoy the city’s array of cathedrals, vineyards and local cuisine. You can even visit Renoir’s home at #6 Rue de l’Abreuvoir if your date happens to love art!

Kiribati

The Central Pacific is home to a unique string of islands that lie in the very middle of the equator, the 180th meridian, and, as in the case of Kiribati, the international dateline. Why is this helpful for a romantic vacation, you might ask? Call us a little old fashioned, but we still believe it’s good luck to kiss the one you love at midnight on New Year’s. Since Kiribati allows you and your date to see the New Year before the rest of the world, you can also share the very first kiss of the year!

Ellis Island

This island has a unique location known as the “kissing post” in the west wing of the building. The process of immigrating to the U.S. used to be quite rigorous, and not everyone was accepted into the country. The process of acceptance or rejection could take several weeks while hopeful family members waited for their loved ones. The kissing post is where families, husbands, and wives were reunited after long separation. The kissing post on Ellis Island is now a popular place to smooch your loved one and enjoy a historical tour.
